Mr. Guilfoyle - Grade 8 Latin

Latin I provides students with an introduction to the Latin language and provides instruction in Latin vocabulary, grammar, English derivatives, and Roman culture.  The grammar covered includes inflection, noun and verb forms, and parts of speech.  Latin vocabulary gives students a good way to increase their vocabulary skills as nearly fifty percent of English words are derived from Latin.  Cultural topics include the Roman emperors, Roman housing and food, gladiators, and much more.  Highlights of the course are taking the National Latin Exam in early march and attendance at the Pennsylvania Junior Classical League Convention at Penn State in late May.  G.M.S. students have consistently scored among the top scores nationally on the National Latin Exam and have won numerous awards and recognitions at the P.A.J.C.L. Convention.
