Job Opportunity

Attention seniors:  American Thermoplastic Company located in the RIDC Park near Blawnox/Fox Chapel is offering a summer employment opportunity.  This company is looking for 18 year olds wishing to be employed June through August. 

American Thermoplastic manufactures many products, but are known for their quality loose-leaf binders.  The positions available would be working in their factory, possibly running machinery, or packing binders in shipping boxes or whatever is needed.  The hours are 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday.  One of the perks is that they have an air-conditioned factory.  The pay rate is $8.00 per hour.  If you are interested visit their website at www.binders.com

DuquesneFest

Duquesne University is pleased to anounce the date and time of this year's DuquesneFest:  Sunday,      June 9, 2013 beginning at 8:00 AM.  This unique recruiting initiative is their largest open house and most exciting event of the year.  Hundreds of high school students and their families will visit their campus to see all that Duquesne has to offer.

DuquesneFest provides a fun and informative day where Fall 2013 high school seniors and their families can speak with representatives from admissions, financial aid, as well as from other academic, administrative and student life departments.  During the day, there will be many opportunities to learn about college admission procedures, classes, majors and career opportunities.  Students can register online at www.duq.edu/duquesnefest.

PA State Police Youth Week

State Police Youth Week was established in 1970 to increase understanding among the state's youth and its law enforcement.  The objective is to give the cadets the chance to see and experience firsthand many areas of law enforcement, which includes leadership, discipline, and self-esteem.

This is a six day camp used to introduce students interested in going into law enforcement or a branch of the armed forces.  Cadets march in platoon formation and participate in a drill competition.  The program includes physical training, forensics, canine, crime codes, SERT team, rock climbing, drug laws, radar, marksman course and familiarity with weapons.  You should be physically fit, in good health, and have a good academic record to be able to participate.  THIS IS NOT A RECREATIONAL CAMP.

The camp is open to any female or male student who is between the ages of 15-17 prior to entering the camp on June 10th.  Camp wil be held June 9-15, 2013.  A fee of $150.00 (price subject to change) includes meals and lodging.  The fee is paid by the sponsoring post/unit or other civic group, and IS NON-REFUNDABLE.  Transportation is the responsibility of the sponsoring group or the parents of the student.  For an application or if you have any questions, contact The American Legion Department of PA, www.pa-legion.com.

 

Keystone Boys State

The PA American Legion Keystone Boys State program is an educational workshop for high school student leaders, such as student government officers, athletic team captains, and prominenet student organization officers.  Students selected to attend Boys State will have the opportunity to gain leadership skills through a variety of activities and presentations during the weeklong program.  The hallmark and focus of Keystone Boys State is the experientially based government exercise, which spans the city, county and state levels of involvement.  Participants will take on roles in the organization and operation of a mock city, county and state government.

Program dates are June 23-29, 2013 at Shippensburg Unviersity.  High school students who have completed their junior year and reside in PA are eleigible.  Cost is free to student citizens (American Legion Post pays tuition, $175.00/student).  KBS is non-partisan and non-military.  To be nominated and apply to Keystone Boys State, contact your local American Legion Post or PA American Legion HQ.  For more detailed information, please visit the Keystone Boys' State website at www.keystoneboysstate.shtml.
