Sports Physicals for 2024-2025 School Year

The PIAA has changed the rules, effective immediately, regarding the earliest date one can receive a physical for the upcoming school year. In the past, the physicals needed to be completed on or after June 1st of each new school year and were good for the entire school year unless the student obtained an injury. For the 2024-2025 school year, and going forward they have changed this date to on or after May 1st. The idea is that students will still be in school and therefore communication regarding offered physicals will be more effective. As a result, we will be holding our school sports physicals for the upcoming school year on Monday, May 13, from 3:00-5:00pm in the high school nurses office. If your student(s) entering grades 7-12 for the upcoming school year are interested in participating in a school sport, this is a great opportunity to have this done and out of the way before summer break. The cost of the physical is $15 cash only. Students should wear shorts and wear their contacts or bring their glasses if they wear them. Please make sure to print out the attached forms and bring them along. Parents/Guardians must complete and sign the health history form prior to the student receiving the physical. In addition, parents will not be able to complete the online athletic forms until the Skyward rolls over in mid to late June. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the athletic office at 412-373-5750.

Volleyball Deer Lakes @ Gateway (05/02/24)

The Gators got their groove back on Tuesday night in the Swamp in a critical late-season section match against the Deer Lakes Lancers that saw the Gators sweep the Lancers 3-0 to secure a big dub for their last regular season home match of the season. Making the occasion all the more special, Gateway also recognized their seniors this evening, and it was, in fact, a senior-dominated line-up that left the Lancers looking lost on this night. In the first set, Gateway set the pace for the evening with a thunderous 25-07 drubbing with their all-senior lineup; in the second set, some of the baby Gators were worked into the lineup to secure a 25-17 win; and in the third and final set, several first-year senior players made their Varsity debut and helped to secure a strong 25-16 close. Tonight was all about honoring the young men who will be graduating in just a few short weeks, so the shoutouts go to senior squad: Chase Anthony, Clinton Idris, Jace Beam, Alec Dunsmore, Aiden Gerhart, Will Hansmann, Ryan Hoffner, Tim Hudson, Keagan Kyper, Daniel McGeorge, Jake Pawlowski, Jake Santo, Bertram "JR" Sherman, and Diego Valentin. For their final regular season matchup before playoffs, the Gateway boys will travel cross-county to rustic Greater Latrobe for a final section match against the feisty Wildcats to determine who finishes the season in second place in WPIAL AA-Section 2 ball.

Volleyball - Gateway @ Armstrong 4/30/24

The Gateway Boys Volleyball team suffered a tough in-section loss in an away match against the Armstrong River Hawks on Tuesday, April 30th, 2024.  After a slow, labored start in the first set (Armstrong 25 - Gateway 12), momentum was firmly in the talons of the River Hawks heading into the latter sets. In the second set, the Gators nearly chomped their way back to prominence before losing a nail-biter 26-24, and despite some fiery play in the third set, the River Hawks ultimately flew to glory with a 25-20 clincher. The Gators will look to find their swagger in time for a quick turnaround against Deer Lakes in a pivotal Senior Night match set for this upcoming Thursday in the Swamp. JV play will begin at 6:00 and will immediately be followed by Senior Night recognition and varsity play.

Track & Field Results - 4/27/24

Saturday, at the South Fayette Invitational, which featured over 50 teams, several Gators earned medalist recognition for their outstanding performances: For the girls team Kiki Pitts and Kalee Kellman placed 3rd and 8th respectively in the 100m Hurdles. Kiki also placed 6th in the 300m low hurdles, and Taniya Denson placed 8th in the Pole Vault, and the 1600m Relay team of Jace Smith, Joslynn Joseph’s, Pitts and Kellman ran to an 8th place finish.

He then anchored the 400m Relay team of Jonathan Nelson, Sid Bryant, Caleb Bell, and himself to a second place finish. Caleb Bell also placed 2nd in the the 400 and anchored the 1600m Relay team of Nizaiah Helker, Isaiah Kelley, Lemuel Nortey and himself to a 5th place on the podium. Boys Volleyball - Mars (3) - Gateway (0) 04/23/24

The Gateway Boys Volleyball team outlasted the Derry Trojans in an absolute barnburner on Thursday night (04/25/24) in the Swamp. Momentum swung back and forth throughout the evening, as Derry claimed the first set (Derry 27- Gateway 25) before falling to the Gators in the second and third sets (Gateway 25 - Derry 23 & Gateway 25 - Derry 16). Just when it seemed like the Trojans were done for, they caught the Gators off guard in the fourth set with Derry coming out on top 25-22.  After the Gators won the fifth-set coin toss, they finished what they started and defended their home turf with a thunderous 15-6 dub in the final set in order to take home a coveted section win and avenge their prior loss to Derry earlier in the season. With this victory, the Gators improved to 4-3 in Section 2-AA and 7-3 on the season. With this loss, Derry falls to 2-4 in Section 2-AA play and 5-6 overall on the season. The Gators were led in kills by Alec Dunsmore (OPP), Darious Farrar (OH), and Ryan Hoffner (OH); led in blocks by middle hitters Jake Santo and Jake Pawlowski; and led in serving aces by the fiery Keagan Kyper. Gateway returns to action on Tuesday of next week when they travel for another important section match that will take place against the Armstrong River Hawks.

WPIAL DOUBLES CHAMPS

Volleyball - 4/23/24

The Gateway Boys Volleyball team lost a tough fought battle with Section 2 - AA leaders Mars on Tuesday, April 23rd, 2024, in the Swamp. Despite some tenacious front row play - notably from Alec Dunsmore (OPP), Jace Beam (S/OPP), and Darious Farrar (OH) - and some ridiculous displays of athleticism in the back row - notably from Keagan Kyper and Owen Echegaray - the Fighting Planets' well-rounded, diverse offense and spirited defense were too much for the Gators to overcome. Following this contest, the Gators fall into 3rd place in Section 2 - AA with a section record of 3-3 and an overall record of 6-3, and Mars continues its perfect season with a current section record of 6-0 and an overall record of 12-0.  Looking ahead, the Gators will look to avenge an early season loss to their only other team that they've lost to this season, the Derry Trojans, with a home section match on Thursday, April 25th, 2024.  JV play will begin at 6:00 p.m., and Varsity will immediately follow afterwards.

Track & Field - 4/22/24

Monday, despite a stellar team effort and some terrific performances, the Gator boys Track team was unable to overcome the loss of stalwart distance runner Kefimba Cisse and fell to Central Catholic 80-70 in a contest that wasn’t settled until the last event. Winners included Dino Naderevic in the Shot and Discus, Kenny Lewis in the 100, 200, and 400 meter relay, Kairell McCoy in the 1600 and 800, Dyson Harper in the high jump , Nathan Eichenmiller in the pole vault, and Caleb Bell in the 400.
